Drug-Related Mass Arrest on December 8, 2008

Wise- On Monday, December 8, 2008, the Wise County Sheriff’s Department, Southwest Narcotics Task Force, Virginia State Police, Town of Wise Police Department, Coeburn Police Department, and Big Stone Gap Police Department combined to conduct a Mass Arrest of 27 offenders who were indicted by the Multi-Jurisdiction Grand Jury. This Mass-Arrest targets individuals throughout the whole county.

These arrests stem from an ongoing investigation by the Southwest Narcotics Task Force. Since 2005, the investigation has resulted in over 400 arrests. “We are lucky to have law enforcement agencies in Wise County that work so well together. A 3 year investigation takes a lot of time, manpower, teamwork, and dedication. I appreciate all of their efforts”, said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ron Elkins.

Coeburn Man Sentenced for Animal Cruelty

On November 12, 2008, a Wise County, Virginia, jury convicted James Timothy Renfro, of Coeburn, of animal cruelty. The one day trial was prosecuted by Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Suzanne Kerney-Quillen. After deliberating for approximately thirty minutes, the jury sentenced Renfro, 46, to six months in jail and a $500 fine.

The case stemmed from an investigation by Wise County Animal Control officers concerning Renfro’s care of a horse he owned. Specifically, officers alleged that Renfro failed to provide necessary food for the horse, resulting in significant weight loss and overall deterioration of its health. renfro-press-release-125 (PDF)
